Congratulations to Heecheon Kim, who has received the 20th Hermès Foundation Missulsang. The prestigious prize is awarded biennially to recognize a young contemporary Korean artist of exceptional promise. Past recipients, many of whom have gone on to greater recognition, include Do Ho Suh, Koo Jeong A, and Minouk Lim.

In addition to prize money, the artist is given the opportunity and funding to participate in the foundation’s artist-in-residence program in Paris and to produce a new project for a solo exhibition in 2024 at Atelier Hermès, a gallery within the luxury label’s flagship store in Seoul.

In selecting Kim, the jury lauded his work for its engagement with “challenging and urgent questions that have emerged in the current digital era — the reconstruction of the human body, emotions, memory, imagination, and ultimately, self-awareness.”

This year’s six-member international jury was composed of Sunjung Kim (Artistic Director, Art Sonje Center, Seoul); Sook-Kyung Lee (Senior Curator, International Art, Tate Modern, London); Doryun Chong (Deputy Director, M+, Hong Kong); Guillaume Desanges (President, Palais de Tokyo, Paris); Hou Hanru (Artistic Director, MAXXI, Rome); and Laurent Pejoux (Director, Fondation d’entreprise Hermès).
