Sikyung Sung
Sikyung Sung (b. 1991) creates abstract paintings marked by gestural brushwork and bold chromatic contrasts, moving fluidly between spontaneity and deliberation, chance and choice. Rather than depicting specific forms or narratives, he explores how momentary sensation and pictorial judgment coalesce into structure on the canvas.
His work begins with fleeting forms, passing thoughts, and momentary impressions. Yet for Sung, painting is not a matter of reproducing a predetermined image, but a process through which color, line, and layers of paint enter into relation within the pictorial field. Elements that originate from different points move in divergent directions, forming unexpected moments of balance and tension on the canvas.
Intuitive brushstrokes, subtly accumulated textures of paint, sharply contrasting colors, and restrained areas of negative space push and pull against one another, generating a dynamic pictorial structure while revealing distinct layers of time and decision. Although these traces may appear spontaneous, they are guided by a careful control that calibrates the density and flow of the composition. In this ambivalent state, where impulse and restraint, instability and balance coexist, Sung reveals the moment in which painting is distilled into an order of sensation.
Sung holds a BFA from Hongik University, Seoul, and an MFA from the Seoul National University of Science and Technology. His solo exhibitions include BB&M (Seoul, 2025); d/p (Seoul, 2023); and Space Heyong/Shift (Seoul, 2019). Selected group exhibitions include Songzhuang Contemporary Art Archive (Beijing, 2026); BB&M (Seoul, 2025, 2024, 2023), PCO (Seoul, 2025), INTERIM (Seoul, 2024), DMZ Art Project (Paju, 2023), Factory 2 (Seoul, 2023), Hongik University Museum (Seoul, 2023), P21 (Seoul, 2022), Whistle (Seoul, 2022), Art Space 3 (Seoul, 2022, 2019), Perigee Gallery (Seoul, 2021), and One and J.
