Sikyung Sung
Born in 1991 and based in Seoul, Sung is among the most noteworthy emerging Korean painters today, gaining increasing attention with his distinctive modes of visual expression. Sung seeks a balance between improvisation and planning, chance and choice. When facing the canvas, he creates his works through intuitive decisions, without any pre-established plans. Through this process, Sung discovers new forms of expression and explores how his spontaneous choices in the moment come together to shape the composition. Rather than devising concrete forms, Sung pursues a pure visual language through recurring, aleatory trajectories of the brush, resulting in an exquisite melding of intersecting patterns on the canvas and expressive mark making arising from momentary intuition.
Sung holds a BFA from Hongik University, Seoul, and an MFA from the Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He had his solo exhibition at Space Heyong/Shift, Seoul (2019), at d/p, Seoul (2023), and at BB&M, Seoul (2025). His work has been included in group exhibitions at Factory2, Seoul (2023); BB&M, Seoul (2023); and DMZ Art Project, Paju, Korea (2023); among others.
